Jardins d’automne
[Autumn Gardens]

1995 - 96

Drawings are rarely thought of as being weighty. And yet, these small-format artworks condense matter, much like bulbs, seeds and rhizomes concentrate life forces before their winter sleep. Developed from sketches made on location and photographs capturing various botanical details, the Autumn Gardens are illustrations of the microcosm verging on abstraction.

Dominique Laquerre drew on stripped plasterboards using charcoal. Delicate touches of pigments are added to the surface that has been engraved and sculpted. Out of time, these Autumn Gardens are reminiscent of the texture of antique frescos, while their steel frame provides a form of strength that balances out the fragile, ethereal aspect of the works.
